Castries Mayor, Peterson Francis, says sometime within the next two weeks, members of the City Police Unit will soon be equipped with firearms. Twenty-three newly hired city police officers were sworn in last month. The move came as a swift response to increasing incidents of crime in the city. As such, the City Mayor the city officers are not yet fully equipped or uniformed. The officers dohave the power to make arrests and will be involved in a crackdown on a number of offences in the capital, including spitting, urinating and defecating in public.
