In his Budget Address for the financial year 2017 – 2018, – titled Building a new St Lucia – Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, highlighted areas of focus for his government in a bid to improve the lives of St Lucians. These included – Creating Sustainable Employment with a Tourism Led Strategy and a National Apprenticeship Programme. In Agriculture the government promised to focus on Banana Resuscitation and Agriculture Diversification. A Road Infrastructure programme was also announced along with an Education Revolution, Advancing the Health Reform Agenda and improving Security and Justice and strengthening Border Control. As the Prime Minister gets set to lay out another budget, he says he is excited about the prospects for growth in the economy, even amid what he admits are financial constraints. On the other hand the leader of the opposition, Phillip J Pierre, says he is not excited and neither does he believe that the people of St Lucia are excited. He expects much of the same promises with no significant results.
