A father and his two children are currently living on boat in the harbor after their home was destroyed by fire. Social activist Catherine Sealys has called for state agencies to intervene and assist the family. She laments a lack of policies that address the needs of such vulnerable people. She is especially critical of the discontinuation of the Distress Fund which was previously in place to assist fire victims. She says it is shameful that the Prime Minister’s Office put an end to the Fund. The Prime Minister had argued in Parliament that such policies create situations of mendicancy and are not necessarily a right fit.
