Moves are afoot to improve the regulatory framework concerning cannabis. Authorities say they are taking a step by step approach and are not yet looking at decriminalizing or legalizing cannabis. Rather they are seeking to improve the regulatory framework. A cannabis regulatory commission has been put in place, headed by Dr Stephen King and including, Andre Decaries, Dr St Rose, the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of police, a representative of the Iyanola Council for the advancement of Rastafari, Dr Marcus Day among others. Speaking to CMC, Minister for National Security, Hermangild Francis, said The St Lucia government is planning a series of town hall meetings to discuss the decriminalisation of marijuana. The Minister says it is important for the discussion to take place, and to explore the properties and use of hemp. The discussions planned consultations will be held in the 17 constituencies on the island. He added that discussions have so far been held with the Attorney General on reviewing legislation with the intent to assess how to amend the Drug Act.
